- Many users of a dialup provider I deal with are experiencing frequent
- broken connections. On modems with connect-rate displays, these hangups
- appear to occur during rate re-negotiation attempts. Hangups are
- most-severe when users dial in through noisy lines (of course), and vary
- by modem manufacturer (see below).
-
- I was wondering what triggers the rate re-negotiation, and if it might be
- feasible to disable it. I know that MultiTech rack-mounts have an option
- for disabling re-negotiation, but I haven't seen this on any common
- modems. What determines when re-negotiation is necessary?

- Specifics for the curious:
-
- The dialup provider is using American Data Systems (?) rack-mount modems,
- apparently a brand of modem which used to be sold by Motorola.
-
- A couple of modems can maintain a v.34 link reliably above 24kbps (tested:
- USRobotics PC internal, Supra powerbook internal). Most users can
- maintain a connection if they limit their connect speed to 14.4kbps
- (tested: MultiTech ZDX, Motorola Lifestyle). Some users can't even
- maintain 14.4kbps connections (tested: Global Village 28.8 external,
- Global Village PowerBook 19.2, USRobotics Mac&Fax).
-
- For modems which drop conenctions even at 14.4, turning off v.32bis seems
- to insure a reliable link; but I think this also limits connect speed to
- 9600.
